Provincetown Theater and Dance

Provincetown Theater has announced their line-up, beginning with the 2020 Winter Play Dates and the 24 Hour Plays. Other venues will announce their line-ups in the spring.

By the way – the Wellfleet Harbor Actors’ Theater has a great summer line-up each year, and it’s only a 20 minute drive from Provincetown.

2020 Theater Productions

2020 Winter Play Dates

What: It may be “off-season” on the Outer Cape, but that doesn’t mean Provincetown Theater’s stage is dark. Starting January 28, they begin the “Winter Play Dates” free play-reading series! Come join them on the following Tuesday nights below at 7 pm for new American play readings. The 2020 Winter Play Dates features new works from playwrights from Cape Cod, Boston, Providence, New York, and Los Angeles.

24-Hour Plays

What: The Provincetown Theater, in conjunction with The Provincetown Playwrights’ Lab, presents the 10th anniversary production of The 24-Hour Plays on Presidents’ Day weekend. Seven writers, seven directors and 21 actors will participate in the annual event in which plays are written, rehearsed, and premiered within 24 hours. The 2020 playwrights are Lucy Blood, Linda Fiorella, Tamora Israel, Bob Keary, Jody O’Neil, Fermin Rojas and Kate Wallace-Rogers.

The Drag

What: The Drag by Mae West (Yes, that Mae West!) is a play that was shut down by the Vice Squad en route to Broadway in 1927. At long last, the Provincetown Theater is thrilled to bring this American icon’s vintage comic melodrama — about a closeted Park Avenue newlywed leading a double life with a band of Greenwich Village drags queens — back to the stage! A New England Premiere,

The Drag by Mae West

The Lady Hamlet

What: The Lady Hamlet by Sarah Schulman was such a triumph in the theater’s 2019 Winter Play Dates reading series that they’re honored to be producing its world premiere. The play is a smart, rollicking comedic duel between two lesbian stage stars at the turn of the 20th century vying to be the first — and best! — female Hamlet on Broadway. A World Premiere!

Jerker

What: Jerker by Robert Chesley is love story that is, in the words of its author, “A pornographic elegy with redeeming social value in twenty phone calls, many of them dirty.” Indeed, Chesley’s poetic duet-of-a-play builds a deeply romantic bond between a pair of gay men in San Francisco in 1987 via the oft-ridiculed activity of phone sex. A Cape Cod Premiere!

Jerker Provincetown Theater

The Cake

What: The Cake by Bekah Brunstetter is the seriously funny new play by the Emmy-nominated writer/producer of NBC’s smash hit This Is UsThe Cake follows Della, a middle-aged North Carolina baker who is asked by her best friend’s daughter to bake the cake for the young woman’s same-sex wedding. A series of “Community Conversations” will follow select performances of The Cake to engage audience members in a discussion of shared experiences, values, and concerns. A Cape Cod Premiere!

A Moon for the Misbegotten

What: The 2020 season will close with Eugene O’Neill’s classic tale of love, family, and forgiveness, A Moon for the Misbegottenin an embrace of Provincetown’s historical place in American Theater.

2020 Dance Events

Cape Dance Festival

What: The annual Cape Dance Festival presents a spectacular evening of dance at the Province Lands Outdoor Amphitheater. Last year’s dancers include: Cirio Collective, Chalvar Monteiro, local hip hop icons Billy and Bobby McClain, Limón Dance Company’s Kristen Foote, Provincetown’s Eryc Taylor.
